Nobody Loves You: This song (as with most of these) was composed about 20 years or so ago. It’s your typical unrequited love story (totally fictional). The line “I’ve got something for you” which propelled the lyrics, was a result of a real conversation I had where the other person replied “I don’t want it”.
Sister Sacrificed: This song is based on circumstances experienced by one of my closest friends that I consider my sister. One of my wife’s and my favorite things was seeing the “Bands at the Beach” in Santa Cruz, CA our very favorite being “Papa Doo Run Run” (several members played with the Beach Boys and they primarily play Beach Boys songs). The seed for the musical idea hit me the day after seeing Papa at the beach. I’ll let you all decide if there’s a direct influence!
Can’t Get There From Here: I had this one fleshed out well over 20 years ago, maybe closer to 30. It was written at a time in my life when I could see my ideal life but had no idea how to attain it.
Walking In The Middle: This song lyrically looks at the place where I grew up (Santa Clara, CA). The imagery contains a lot of references that mean nothing to anybody but me unless you grew up in that area. The choruses and final verse bring me back to being an adult and the “stuff” that brings.
Love Can Get You By: I had a very old version of this recorded but I decided to redo it. I decided to go with an 80’s vibe as opposed to the straight-ahead rock feel that it originally had. The lyrics are a nod to the tenets I have adopted through my life in recovery from alcohol and drugs. Together we can get through.
On Gossamer Wings: The theme of this instrumental piece is loosely inspired by “Europa”, an instrumental by Santana and has been with me forever. I fleshed it out with spots for individual instruments to stand out.
Time After Time: This is one of my all-time favorite songs. I’m not ashamed to say that it often moves me to tears when I hear it. My aim was to stay faithful as possible to the original recording (transposed so I could sing it) in the choruses and bring a little of my own stamp in the verses by adding 12 string guitar. I waffled several times on the inclusion of the clock ticks and drum beats but decided to leave them in.
4 Suns: The musical idea for this has been kicking around for quite a while. I kept experimenting with different chorus ideas and nothing worked as well as the original idea that I decided to go with. The lyrical idea sprouted by presentation I attended in 2015 or so where a schizophrenic gentleman in recovery was describing one of his episodes where he thought he was an undercover agent running from enemy spies and he looked up in the sky and saw four suns. I never made that story work and decided on a sci-fi-ish story where a man who has been degraded by his captors somehow ascends to a God-like position as the fourth “sun” appended to a trinity. He is deemed not worthy and is forced to surrender that position.
Promenade-Lost Lamb: (Dedicated to Mark Thompson)
The Lost Lamb section of this piece was written somewhere around 2020, 21. It was originally a vocal song that lamented one of our grandchildren being in the foster care system. The song was never recorded and was unnecessarily sad and negative. I decided to use the bones for an instrumental. My good friend and fellow guitar addict, Mark Thompson, passed away in 2021. Mark had given me a classical guitar that he had in storage for years that ended up being cracked at the heel where the neck meets the body. He went on to ammas a hell of guitar collection. I had the guitar repaired here in Portland, OR by a great luthier. I used the guitar on Lost Lamb and orchestrated around it. Promenade is a new composition, my attempt at orchestration which I would like to explore further going forward.
Better part of me: (Dedicated to my wonderful wife: Georgia)
The song goes waaaay back. I found this clip on an old cassette tape done with guitar and drum machine. I believe it was presented to our band Processor (with the working title “Let me try to be free”) as a possible inclusion in a new set of songs that we embarked on around 1992 or so. We ended up not using it but I loved the chord changes. I colored up the chords a little using piano to re-compose the main section. The lyrics are intentionally mushy but sincere in conveying the undying love I have for Georgia.
Sunset Falls: This is the only completely new song. I became attracted to Bluegrass music around 2016 or so after seeing the band The Steel Drivers live in concert. One of their songs that struck me was Where Rainbows Never Die, a song about the peace that accompanies dieing. This song echoes the sentiments in “rainbows”.
Father Time: (Dedicated to Chris Bundy)
Chris was a member of our band Processor proceeding our guitarist, Rob Moore. Both have since passed on to the great gig in the sky. Chris left the area around 1986 or so with his new bride, PJ to settle in the east coast area. Chris was battling Parkinson’s disease but came back to the bay area to visit somewhere around 2011. We held an impromptu reunion of Processor where Chris, feeling relatively good at the time, presented a new song. We wrote a new section to add to his verses with accompanying lyrics and did a rough demo (which I have not been able to find). Steve and I began recording this in my DAW with Steve playing the drums on my Roland electronic kit. I was able to use the bass line I recorded and Steve’s drum tracks and a 12-string guitar playing the body of the song. I redid the lead guitar, added the vocals and tweaked it accordingly.
A list of the musicians (the ones I can remember anyway) that I have had the pleasure and good fortune to play alongside. Thank you all for your contribution to my musical life!
